What It Is
West Nile virus (WNV) is a disease spread by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. The infected mosquito can then spread the virus to people and other animals, such as horses.
Symptoms
Most people who get West Nile virus do not feel sick. For those who do, symptoms may include:
Fever
- Headache
- Rash
- Muscle weakness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
A small number of people may develop serious symptoms such as:
- Tremors
- Limb weakness or paralysis
- Altered mental status
- Other neurological symptoms
In rare cases, West Nile virus can be fatal.
Important to Know
West Nile virus does not spread from person to person.
Treatment
Treatment is usually supportive care, and many people recover on their own.
Local Information
The first human cases of West Nile virus in Kern County were reported in 2004. Since then, more than 500 Kern County residents have been diagnosed.
